ANN ARBOR– Amid the 2-5 loss to rival Yaks Tuesday night, Ashley’s Hopslam otherwise skated to a 2-2 tie excepting goals from defenseman Ed O’Brien. “The numbers all go to eleven (O’Brien),” explained Yaks spokesman Nigel Tufnel. “Look, right across the board– eleven, eleven, eleven…”
Continued Tufnel: “You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten.” It was not certain if Tufnel was speaking of a skill level or game times. In fact, the game started at 10pm.
For their part, Hopslam hung tough in the first period with goals from Chris Sutton and Bob Brock. However, the team could not score despite passing and cycling well. “We had some good chances,” said defenseman Mark Woods. “But, we just couldn’t quite score.”
Tufnel, addressing Hopslam, mockingly asked, “Where can you go from there? Where?”
“Nowhere. Exactly.” he continued. “What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?”
The answer seemed almost scripted: put it to eleven.
But, when asked why not simply work as a team and rely on several other players for goals, Tufnel looked confused. “These go to eleven,” he answered simply.
Indeed, they do.
