ANN ARBOR– Ashley’s Ruination jumped out early and late to cruise past Mott 11-4 in the first round of the Fall 2013 C-League playoffs. Nine different players scored, including two goals from defenseman Jason Spence and forward John Vella. “We score double digits, but we aren’t (bleeps) about it,” said Spence matter-of-factly.

“Mostly because (Sean) Payeur wasn’t here,” added defenseman Mark Woods. Payeur is serving a one-game suspension following Ruination’s season closer with Thompson’s Pizza last Tuesday. Woods finished the game with two assists and the lone penalty (tripping) for Ashley’s.
“That’s a Gordie Howe hattrick… minus the goal,” said Woods proudly, who most likely wasn’t even on the ice when he received the assist from Vella’s first goal.
“That’s my assist!” complained Ricky Winowiecki (goal, assist). “Make sure I get credit for that assist!”
Woods retained credit for the assist, later calling his 2-assist, 1-penalty night a “Ted Speers” hattrick. Forward Dave Winn, sneered with disdain, citing the fact that he has played with the former Detroit Red Wing and local hockey hero. Winn likened Woods to Speers’s avatar in the Sega Genesis NHL video game from the early 1990’s.
“He was very slow, and it made me angry,” said Winn, though it was uncertain if he was speaking of Woods or the avatar… or both.
