ANN ARBOR– Following Hopslam’s 3-3 overtime shootout loss (0-1) to the Ice Dogs, crestfallen players were left looking for answers. “You should have scored three,” said defenseman Mike Leighton to defenseman Mark Woods.
“I’ve never scored three goals in my dreams,” said Woods. “And I’m pretty darned good in my dreams.”
“We could blame Bernie (Bachli),” suggested center Ricky Winowiecki, for no other reason than the fact that he was no longer in the locker room. Others were offered up as scapegoats following his departure from the locker room.
Certainly, there was no reason to blame anyone, as the team fought back from a 1-3 deficit late in the third period to tie the game. Chris Sutton grabbed the initial 1-0 lead in the first, while Andrew Thompson got the team closer after falling behind, with just over seven minutes left. Luke Bell tied it up a couple minutes later.
Paul Sholtis was brilliant in net, particularly in the overtime and shootout, stopping all but one shot (Ice Dog’s Brian Carney), which seemed initially stopped, but somehow found its way into the net.
No closer to the answer, the team had no other choice than to blame everything on the poor sales of the Ashley’s Hockey 2014 Calendar. “We tried to make it classy and tasteful,” said GM Mark Woods. “Hence the sweater.”
Added Woods: “However, in this day and age where you’ve gotta show some skin if you wanna win (in sales), we just weren’t willing to go that far. This isn’t the Ann Arbor T-shirt Company. So, it’s going to be lean holiday season.”
“Sales are blowing up,” said Winowiecki.
“Merry Christmas,” said Al Juback.
