Press Conference Hotbed of Political Correctness

ANN ARBOR– Ashley’s Ruination beat the Black Bears 1-0 Tuesday night in the decisive Game 3 championship series. Matt Schaefer scored mid-way through the first period, getting the assist from Shawn Lopez and Sean Payeur. Rusty Barron played inspired hockey at net turning away every Black Bear opportunity to earn the shut out. The team has won their sixth championship in eight seasons, and their second C-League championship.

The press conference following the game, however, proved to be less successful, though largely because of GM Mark Woods’s insistence on “political correctness,” a social phenomenon from the early 1990s often expressed in the use of terms deemed less offensive.

“I just want to say that the African American Bears were a great team. They played excellent hockey. I’m just grateful that we have a great group of skating persons on our team,” said Woods carefully.

“Happy Holiday season to all,” he added.

Woods initially wished everyone a Merry Christmas, then tried to add Hanukkah or “Chanukah,” Kwanzaa, Saturnalia for anyone trying to reclaim ancient Roman heritage, Boxing Day for gift-givers on the 26th, and finally “Festivus for the rest of us… meaning Dave (Ferguson, of the Ashley’s Aventinus team).” Realizing the futility of trying to account for every possibility, he settled on “Congratulations, again!”
