ANN ARBOR– “I can’t get that song out of my head!” cried a plaintive Dave Ferguson last week, referring to the Green Acres television theme song.
“I can’t get those songs out of my head!” he exclaimed again in last night’s 1-3 loss to the GoalDiggers, who claimed the Tier II championship series (2-0). Ferguson, however, was referring to the entire playlist from The Sound of Music soundtrack.
The infection spread to other members of the team. Defenseman Mark Woods was heard belting out “My Favorite Things” in warm-ups. “I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feeeeeeeeellll, sooooo baaa-aaad,” sang Woods.
Following the bitter defeat however, the raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens failed to lift his spirits as claimed by the song.
In the press conference, several players noted a disconnect from the relatively high skill level of the team and winning championships, but felt highly optimistic going into next season. “Someday, we’ll find it,” crooned Tom Colis, Jeff Meden (who scored Aventinus’s lone goal), and Nate Greenman, referring to next year’s title hopes as the so-called “Rainbow Connection.”
Mark Johnston, pressed into centerman duties, hoped that such dreams were not borne of a world of “pure imagination,” singing from the 1971 film, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, with the song performed by Gene Wilder.
