ANN ARBOR– Have you seen this goalie? Chances are if you watched the first half of the first period or about ten minutes of the second period, you might have had to say ‘no’ as goaltender Jeff Phillion battled time management troubles and sore feet as Aventinus skated through the trials to earn a 6-3 victory against Goon Squad 2 Wednesday night.
“I’m not sure what exactly happened,” said GM Mark Woods. “In Australia, we’d call this going ‘on walkabout,’ but here in Ann Arbor we say he was out to brunch.”
Ginny Klinesteker, who returned after missing two games with vision problems– prompting teammates to remind her there is no “eye” in “team,” finished with two assists and a quizzical expression over the meaning of ‘brunch.’
“It’s not quite breakfast; it’s not quite lunch,” answered line-mate Tom Colis (goal, 2 assists). “But it comes with a slice of cantaloupe at the end.”
Added Woods: “You don’t get completely what you would at breakfast, but you get a good meal.”
Unfortunately, defenseman Daryl Coleman, pressed into goalie duty in Phillion’s absence, was served three biscuits for the meal. Though visibly disappointed, teammates did not hold Coleman responsible for the goals. “I’d say Jeff would have stopped those easily… if his glove stretched from the bench to the net,” noted Woods with a wink.
Phillion otherwise shut down Goon Squad’s offense, but accepted the ‘goals against’ in order to receive the ‘goals for.’ Nate Greenman scored three goals in preparation for the Games of of the Yooper-lympiad, held this weekend on the banks of Lake Huron in St. Ignatius, saying he will be proud to represent Southeast Michigan. Greenman also noted that although security might be an issue at the games, he was pretty confident that mayor Oliver “Olie” Van Houterbouterberg would keep the athletes and fans safe.
Scott Bray added two goals, and Jeff Meden returned from Wine Country to cork off two assists.
