ANN ARBOR– Ashley’s Hockey News Network increased its staff by 200 per cent and several hundreds of pounds (I’ll never tell) when Gary Witt and Bob Brock joined the writing staff Saturday night following Hopslam’s 5-4 win over the Yaks. “We’re happy to have them,” said beat writer Mark Woods. “It gets so lonely here in cyber-space.”
The duo joined news network late into the third period when Witt scored a wrap-around goal in like fashion to teammate Scott Coates, then said, “There, you can write about how the ghost of Coates was here.”
Mike Leighton (2 goals), Al Juback (2 assists), and Steve Gorham (2 assists) laughed heartily on the bench, encouraging Witt to become a writer. Inspired, Brock later chimed in on the bench, “Hey, you can write an article about the ghost of Coates.”
The ghost of Coates was not readily available for comment, nor was the bodily person of Coates, who was last seen at TC Gators in nearby Canton.
Witt and Brock are no strangers to media, having hosted a morning talk-show dubbed Gary and Bob the Brock In the Morning on 101.7 WRIF from 1996-99. Witt later penned his memoirs– an irreverent look back at his college “daze” at Michigan Tech, titled “Beer Biary and Other Witt-icisms.”
Players agreed that the wrap-around goal certainly was worthy of Coates’s patented wrap-around goal, also known as the “the most thrilling 5-8 seconds in hockey.”
