ANN ARBOR– Mark Johnston fought of the effects of a cold and flu-like symptoms to score the game-winning goal as Aventinus rebounds from its loss to Goon Squad Sunday, beating the Yaks 4-2 Wednesday night.
“I told him just to go where the puck ain’t,” said trainer Mark Woods. “When you do that, the puck always finds you!”
Indeed it did, as Johnston actively sought to stay away from the puck and players in an effort to minimize wear and tear and possibly infecting others. But, true to Woods’s homespun hockey philosophy, the puck popped over to Johnston following several shots from Nate Greenman late in the second period. Johnston slammed home the rebound to give Aventinus a 3-0 lead.
The Yaks made a comeback bid in the third, closing to within a goal with just over eight minutes left in the game, but the defense stiffened up, closing in on loose pucks and tying up players until Greenman punched in the empty-netter with 0:25 left on the clock.
Johnston, exhausted but happy, told reporters he planned to celebrate with some chicken soup and NyQuil later in the evening.
