RYDELL HIGH SCHOOL– The Pink Ladies– a so-called female gang at Rydell High School– had cause to celebrate when a late and controversial goal to give the gals a 2-2 tie over rival gang, the Thunderbirds (often informally called Hopslam). When asked about the game, Ice Dogs… er, Pink Ladies captain Betty Rizzo responded, “Peachy keen, jelly bean.”
Rizzo was not without remorse over some of the penalties, but said that the various trips and roughing penalties were not “the worst things I could do.”
Added Rizzo with a melodic tone: “But to cry in front of you… That’s the worst thing I could do.”
The game started with a quick Pink goal, a testament to their “gotta get up and try and try and try” attitude. The game moved back and forth until Andrew Thompson tipped in a Shawn Lopez shot from the point. Lopez dashed in to keep the puck in the zone, turned, and fired in the shot for Thompson.
Captain Danny Zuko referred to the play as “automatic,” “systematic,” and “hyyyyyy-dro-matic,” concluding it was “greased lightning.”
A late Thunderbirds goal in the third was soon dashed away by a 6-on-4 power play goal, though netminder Jeff “Sonny” Phillion seemingly had the puck covered. “How long do I have to (bleeping) keep the puck covered before you blow the (bleeping) whistle?!” exclaimed an exasperated Phillion to the referee. Phillion was assessed an unsportsmanlike penalty.
“Don’t make me laugh ha… ha… ha…” responded Zuko sardonically.
