ANN ARRBOR– Still stinging from their championship loss last season, Ashley’s Aventinus became Ashley’s Avengers after taking down the Goal Diggers 3-2 Sunday night. Defenseman Mark Woods opened the scoring mid-way through the first period, though the Goal Diggers quickly answered back, later taking the lead in the third.

“We were in dire straits,” said Woods. “But then we remembered two things: we like their music and we have Mark Johnston.”
Johnston single-handedly willed the team back into the game with his stick back mid-way through the third (with the assist of Dave Ferguson and Daryl Coleman). Encouraged by the turn of events, Jeff Meden completed the comeback with just six minutes left, taking the rebound from Ginny Klinesteker (2 assists).
Nate Greenman, playing his fifth game in two days, noted with a mixture of pride, fatigue, and rue (whatever that is) that he was “not on the ice for any of the goals.”
The team was even more excited to learn that they have now made it to the finals again, something they didn’t expect. “I thought we had eight teams in the playoffs,” said Meden.
The team was not informed of the complex algorithm involved in director Abe Colwell’s decision to split the D2 league into two tiers and provide two separate championships. “The website was very confusing,” said goaltender and part-time cipher enthusiast Ryan Bidwell. “It was all ‘If A then B and goes to A-squared championship…”
The team will face St. Anky Beer in what is being billed as the Battle of the Brew. “I preferred Brew Bayou, myself,” said Woods, a noted fan of Linda Ronstadt and of claiming that his Asian background allows him to make jokes based on Asian dialects.
