Ashley’s Ruination (3-2-1) got a shot in the arm Tuesday after beating Mott 8-2 at home in Varsity Rink. Forward Brett Vogel opened the scoring in the first to give Ashley’s the lead, though Mott tied it up half-way through the second period.
Matt Schaefer, returning from the injured reserve list, reclaimed the lead with a nice snap shot just above the netminder’s shoulder. Schaefer scored again in the third, and Steve Pouliot added two goals as the ‘Nation broke the game open, outscoring Mott 6-1 in the final 17 minutes of play.
Devin Collinridge, Jason Spence, and Joel Benton all had goals, while newly-acquired Justin Di Censo added three assists, with defenseman Paul Sholtis adding two more.
Rusty Barron was solid in net, allowing just two goals, the second resulting from a miscommunication between winger Dave Winn and defenseman Mark Woods.
“I’ll take 80 percent of the blame,” said Winn. “I thought he was ready for a pass.”
An extensive examination of ill-advised passes made by Winn will begin at the sorority house Alpha Xi Delta at his alma mater circa the late 1980s.
