Hopslam Snaps Back, Tie Gaters

Ashley’s Hopslam (2-4-2) gave up a first period lead, but fought back to tie Gates 3-3 Tuesday night at Varsity Rink. Winger Tom Colis opened the scoring late in the first, but Gates scored the next three goals to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the third period.

Hopslam, however, quickly answered back as Gary Witt scored early in the third period, assisted by Keith Kotimko and Mike Leighton. Bob Brock completed the scoring with an unassisted short-handed goal mid-way through the third. Both teams traded penalties for the rest of the game.

The team celebrated in the dressing room afterward with bottled beer. Initially hesitant to share with the rookies– a process known as “hazing” (or in the case of forward Dexter Benda, “contributing to the delinquency of minors”)– the often out-spoken Kotimko said, “Hey, if she (defenseman Brittany Sczcepanik) can dress with a bunch of old men, she can have a beer!”

Said Sczcpanik regarding the initiation, “Ehh.”
