Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

Cubs AC scored two early goals in the first and held on to beat Ashley’s Hopslam (3-5-2) Tuesday night 1-2. Hopslam led charge after charge, particularly in the third period, finally punching one through with a goal by Dexter Benda with about a minute left in the game. A two-man advantage and a flurry of shots was not enough to tie it up.

Winger Jeff Price missed two golden opportunities with time expiring. Camped on the far side, Price failed to redirect shots into a wide open net. “That’s what I get for using white tape,” said Price.

At times, the team played well together despite the dearth of scoring. However, there were moments in the game where the team also seemed oddly disconnected. “I hate games like these,” said defenseman Brittany Szczepanik. “I’d rather lose 10 to 2.”

“I felt so alone out there,” said center Scott Coates, who assisted on the goal. It was not clear if he was referring to several rushes made without the support of the wing mates Bob Brock and Gary Witt, or voicing a general need for a hug. Neither Brock nor Witt have offered to extend a hug to the center at present.

Coates has been combative at times with teammates. Later reports of an early Wednesday morning altercation following the game took place at Ashley’s Pub when Coates allegedly stated that the movie Fletch, starring Chevy Chase, was a “terrible movie,” prompting a teammate to demand he retract the statement or else “step outside.”

Coates, a pacifist, refused, but continued to further disparage other films, including The Princess Bride, Sleepless in Seattle, and History of the World Part I. He finished by stating that film legend Mel Brooks was “overrated.”

No police reports were filed, but sources say that the beer was delicious.
