Tied-The-Topes

Hopslam (7-9-3) earned their third tie of the season, playing even with the Ice-o-topes (6-8-5) Tuesday night 3-3. Topes winger Kenny Brown opened the scoring in the first about mid-way through the period, but Hopslam quickly answered with a Jeff Price goal from Tom Colis passing behind the net.

“Jeff pretty much can only score when the puck goes slower than five miles an hour,” said winger Gary Witt, who dazzled the Hopslam faithful earlier this month with a blazing backhand shot to secure a win against the first place Cubs AC.

Mike Leighton gave Hopslam the lead just over a minute later with a tough angle backhand through goalie Dan Hall’s five-hole. “I always aim for the goalie’s feet,” said Leighton.

The lead proved tenuous as Topes’ Matt Wood tied it up early in the second. Scott Coates responded by scoring his fifth goal of the season to retake the lead. However, Brown scored his second goal of the night to tie it up again with just over a minute left in the period. Both teams then proceeded to skate through a scoreless third period on the strength of some great stops by netminder by Shawn Lopez.

The tie left the team hungry, figuratively and literally. Defenseman Mark Woods mentioned visiting Detroit landmark Lafayette Coney Island, though Colis suggested chicken shwarma or a BLT. “Bacon, as in a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich,” explained Colis.

When asked about the conversation, actor and comedian Eddie Murphy had no comment, simply looking at the camera without expression.
