Isolated Ice-o-tope?

Sometimes decisions come back to haunt you. These words rang true for GM Mark Woods, who brokered a trade involving three teams and two goalies… and a loss as Aventinus dropped a close game 2-3 to the Ice-o-topes Sunday night. Young goaltender Paul Sholtis was dealt to LifeSport– an Ann Arbor team in the Vets League– in exchange for Shawn Lopez.

“I got a call from their GM (Dave Winn) offering the deal,” said Woods. “They needed a defenseman, and we know Lopez is a proven winner, so it seemed like a win-win situation.”

Indeed, it was a Winn-win situation, but a Woods-lose deal, as LifeSport then brokered a deal with the Ice-o-topes, sending Sholtis to back to Varsity Rink, where he suited up against his former team.

Aventinus jumped out to a 2-1 lead, with both goals from newcomer Chris Sutton, including a short-handed goal. However, Sholtis and the ‘Topes dug in, and managed to tie the game before the end of the second period. The game went back and forth before Mike Lyons was able to get one past Lopez with just under six minutes left.

Asked if he felt isolated and labeled as an Ice-o-tope, Sholtis’ agent (Min Shen of the Offices of Shen, Guo, Wallace, Fitzner & Associates) released this statement on Shotis’ behalf: “After covalently capturing cysteine-containing peptides with pyridyl disulfide reactive groups on agarose beads, extensive wash steps were applied, and the attached peptides were released using a reducing agent.”

“This approach results in less nonspecifically bound peptides and eliminates the possibility of generating avidin peptide background ions that can arise when using methods based on biotin and avidin,” Shen added.

“We’re happy to have Lopez on board,” said Woods. “We just need to make sure we give him more support offensively.”

Though not yet confirmed, sources close to the team have reported that Sholtis was recently acquired by Ashley’s Hopslam and is scheduled to play Saturday.
