Aventinus Fells Bell’s

Ashley’s Aventinus (3-1) topped Bell’s Beer Wednesday evening 4-2, enjoying their best start in years. This is due in large part to a beefed up offense, as the team already has 16 goals in four games. “We had 26 goals total in 17 regular season games,” said GM Mark Woods, speaking of  the Winter 2013 campaign. “That’s going to make a difference.”

Aventinus drew first blood on a short-handed goal by Jen Perry, whose versatility has allowed her to move to wing. “I’m not sure what I’m doing at wing,” said Perry earlier in the season.

“Scoring goals,” said Woods matter-of-factly.

Joe Crossno has also enjoyed the new-look offense, scoring two goals, including the game-winner.

Bell’s Beer hung tough, however, cutting the lead to one late in the third with a break-away goal from Ron Virga. However, Chris Sutton managed to pull past the defense for a seemingly sure empty net goal before being hauled down. Sutton was awarded an automatic goal.

Overshadowed by the high-octane offense is the solid team defensive play, which has allowed only 2.00 goals per game. Defenseman Ed Boucher brought solid play and toughness to the back line, frustrating Dwayne Pachota in the final seconds of play as the two received matching minors for roughing.

“I’m not going to take their crap,” said Boucher, flexing in the locker room.

Taking the win is the much better alternative.
