Beer Reason for Winning, Hopslam

ANN ARBOR–Ashley’s Hopslam (9-5) won their second game in the Post-Schaefer era with goal production from an inspired Shawn Lopez and Scott Coates, who each had two for the night. Ever humble, Coates made no mention of the game.

“All I care about is that there is beer after the game,” said Coates.

“I don’t care about the hockey,” chimed in Gary Witt. “I come for the beer!”

Emotions were running high up through the second period with the score knotted at 0-0 and the prospect of no beer.

“Who has the cooler?” asked several baffled and dismayed teammates.

Just then, like a St. Pauli Girl descending from Hops & Wheat Heaven, defenseman Brittany Szczepanik arrived with the coveted cooler of beer. Scott Coates responded promptly by scoring the first of his two goals, followed by newly added forward Andrew Johnson’s goal.

However, the Ice-o-topes had an answer, keeping the game within a goal through the game until Lopez dropped in the empty-netter with a minute left in the game.

“I’m pretty sure he scored that for Matt,” said defenseman Mark Woods. “Since I’m pretty sure Shawn doesn’t drink beer.”

Added Woods: “What’s up with that?”

For the record, Woods did not drink a beer either. What’s up with that?
