AUBURN HILLS–Flying birds outside of office headquarters for the Ashley’s Hockey franchise oddly reminded GM Mark Woods of his own experiences, particularly on the ice.
“They just sort of fly around in a gigantic cloud,” said Woods in a bemused tone. “They go at it with a lot of purpose, but it’s pretty much aimless.”
“Then they all perch on a wire for a minute or two, and then whoosh! They’re off again, flying to and fro all the live long day.”
“The only thing missing is a puck,” added Woods. “And maybe someone chirping about taking a shorter shift.”
Only a couple more scores were missing Sunday night as Aventinus fell 1-3 to Mott FK, hungry to avenge their sister team from the C-league. Newcomer Jeff Meden got the lone goal for the team in red, tying the game at 1-1 in the second period.
While Woods was not on hand to witness the game, he has noted in the past a tendency for the team to seemingly chase the puck in a cloud of skates and sticks, looking not unlike birds flying in a swarm.
“You’d think we’d notice the futility of wandering aimlessly on the ice,” laughed Woods before getting into his car to drive back home to head to the grocery store, then back home to rest before getting up and going back to work in a ceaseless, aimless pattern not unlike birds flying around looking for a puck.
