White Guys Discuss Multi-Culturalism, Drink Beer

ANN ARBOR– Fulfilling Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of a racially integrated, multi-cultural society, Ashley’s Hopslam performed the next best thing as several of the team’s “white guys” discussed multi-culturalism following their 4-2 win over the Ice-o-topes Tuesday night.

“I used to study Chinese for three hours a night back in college,” said defenseman Mark Woods, who is half Chinese and quite pale.

“Couldn’t you just call your (Chinese) mother?” asked racially sensitive white guy Bob Brock (goal).

Woods discussed the necessity of memorizing Chinese lessons in order to avoid the shame of not knowing– something to desperately be avoided in Chinese culture. White dude Don Restauri agreed, noting the same in Japanese culture.

“When I was taking Spanish in college,” said Caucasian Jeff Price (goal), “I used to just go to Mexicantown.” It was not clear if Price frequented the largely Hispanic section of Detroit to study Latino cultures, the language in particular, or to partake of the food and margarita specials starting around 7pm most days.

As the discussion of language and culture continued, Brock, feeling somewhat curmudgeonly, barked, “The world speaks English! It’s the language of business!”

Brock then finished his beer, grabbed another, and handed cans out to other white guys in the locker, including Scott Coates and Mike Leighton. The team finished the evening with a reading of “Still I Rise” by Maya Angelou and several selection from poet Pablo Neruda.
