Aventinus: Blades of Still, Steal Win

ANN ARBOR– Despite obvious distractions, Ashely’s Aventinus managed to gut out a very ugly 2-1 win over Mott FK Wednesday night to push its win streak to nine games and a gaudy 10-2 start.

“We had some defensive miscues,” quipped defenseman Ron Coleman, referring to the team’s seeming inability to get the puck out of the zone.

“I wasn’t even skating,” said forward Ginny Klinesteker. Many other team members stated they felt like they were “standing still out there.”

Both teams struggled offensively (in part due to great goaltending from Ashley’s Rusty Barron and Mott’s Charlie Huber) until Mott struck first in the second period. Nate Greenman answered back and Amy Senne roofed one over a sprawled out Huber minutes later to give the team the lead.

“I’m not sure why the team struggled,” said GM Mark Woods from the owner’s box. “But we definitely are lucky to walk away with a win in a close, close game.”

“I hate when the game is close in the last couple of minutes,” admitted center Jen Perry. She also mentioned feeling nervous in these pressure-packed situations.

The pressure was definitely turned up when it was noted that league director Abe Colwell had flown in from League Headquarters in Toronto to watch the game after rumors have swirled that Ron Coleman was a “dirty” player. Sources close to the team, however, claim that Coleman is, in fact, not a dirty player, being “one of the few skaters who actually showers after the game.”

However, the publicity has proven to be stress-filled for the young league director, only in his first full year on the job. “I want to get away. I want to get away,” said Colwell.

“I want to fly away. Yeah!” he added.
