ANN ARBOR– Beat writer Mark Woods struggled early Monday morning with the philosophical question of what constitutes news. “Is it really news if it happened last week?” asked Woods.
“I mean, everyone is already aware that (defenseman) Mark Woods and (forward) Jim Socha each had a goal and an assist,” he noted. “So, nothing really new there.”
Added Woods: “Maybe we should call it ‘olds’ instead of ‘news.'”
The debate is itself not a new one, as sports channels reporting round-the-clock updates on the various scores and highlights have made print journalism nothing more than an obsolete historical record of events.
“If I’m not careful, I’ll be as bad as Yahoo’s front page, showing selfie’s of Kim Kardasian or dogs barking at chickens or something,” said Woods.
Luke Bell and Chris Sutton added goals in the 4-2 Hopslam win over the Ice Men last Tuesday night, but you probably already knew that.
Ah! But, you didn’t know that Scott Coates, listed as probable following a knee injury in the third, is now listed as “not likely” as of Monday morning. So, that’s news, right? News-ish? I’ll take it.
