Ferguson’s similar move involved tripping over a locker room trash can while putting on his hockey pants
ANN ARBOR– A distant, distant, distant cousin of Pavel Datsyuk– star forward for the Detroit Red Wings– Dave Ferguson (Dave-syuk to close friends and relatives) was part of a team that downed newcomer beer league team Heidelberg 3-0 Sunday night.
Ferguson assisted on the game-winning goal with just seconds left in the first period, though did give the team a scare with a cross line pass that was intercepted for a break-away chance.
“The guy was open,” said Ferguson, referring to either forward Scott Bray or the opposing player who stole the puck. “I was trying to use one of my Datsyukian moves.”
Since finding out that he is a 12th cousin thrice removed from the Red Wing forward, Ferguson has been quick to mention him in casual conversations. “I was feeling very Datsyukian,” he said in the locker room following the game and a tall Foster’s.
Mike Leighton scored two goals, while Justin Baier added a third. In addition to Ferguson’s Datsyukian assist, Mel Curran and Ginny Klinesteker added assists, while the rest of the team played strong defense and basked in the Dave-syukian glow.
