Ricky’s Lake: Frozen Fish Tale

ANN ARBOR– When songs are sung of the heroics of Hopslam’s 11-2 victory of Sasquatch (the same team that beat Hopslam in overtime in last season’s playoffs), there may be many tales to tell, including Shawn Lopez’s first hat trick for Ashley’s, or John Vella’s two goals, and maybe Matt Schaefer’s goal and two amazing assists.

But none will grow like goaltender Ricky Winowiecki’s assist late in the third period.

Not noted on the score sheet, Winowiecki chased down a loose puck, popping it to forward Derek Johnson, who passed it to Sean McGrath for the final goal of the game, putting the exclamation point to the evening!

Of course, the assist is shrouded in mystery, as some claim it came the prior goal, when Matt Schaefer took the puck in and zipped it past several Sasquatch defenders to Lopez, who slammed it home, putting  the exclamation point to the evening!

And still others claim that Winowiecki  sidestepped several charging Sasquatch players after stopping a blast from Matthew Kolehmainen from the point, whipping a perfect saucer pass to Schaefer, who zipped it past several Sasquatch defenders to Jeff Meden, who slammed it home, putting  the exclamation point to the evening!

Video footage was grainy and deemed “indecisive,” according to league officials speaking from Toronto.

“Tell Sholtis about my goal,” said Winowiecki, referring to a fellow goaltender Paul Sholtis.

In any event, much will be said of that night on the frozen lake, Ricky’s lake. Most of it will likely be untrue. Or will it?
