ANN ARBOR– Ashley’s Aventinus made one of its better showings, but fell to the Leafs 3-6 Wednesday night, disproving the growing belief that winger Gary Witt’s presence correlates with winning.”There goes that theory!” a teammate said over the din of the locker-room post-game discussion.

Colis finishes his check, but receives an interference penalty. The referee cringes in anticipation of receiving the dreaded “header to the nards”
Witt, however, did contribute to the team’s improved play, scoring in the second period to give the team a 3-2 lead. However, the lead was soon lost, as the Leafs methodically marched time and again on the flagging Aventinus team. Miscues and mistakes were capitalized upon, proving too much for the team to overcome.
Despite the loss, there was hope. “This is the best we’ve played against this team,” said forward Ginny Klinesteker. Indeed, Aventinus has been outscored 1-20 in the last four games prior to Wednesday night, including a 0-5 playoff loss over the Summer season.
Tom Colis returned to the team, gathering a goal, assist, and penalty for the Gordie Howe hat trick, while Jeff Price has enjoyed a Renaissance of sorts, scoring three goals and an assist in four games to start the season.
Witt, however, was still bemused over the losses despite the improved play. Uncertain why the team might be struggling, he cracked open his third “tall boy” for the night, handed out several extra beers to players, and continued puzzling over critics’ comments that the team seems “to be slowing down” a bit.
No answers were readily available, so teammates decided to drink more beer and continue to think over it.
