‘Topes of the World, Ma!

Ashley’s Aventinus (1-3-1) fell to the Ice-o-Topes 2 Wednesday night 1-3 in a close battle. Center Justin Baier– cleared to play by team doctors after complaints of back pain– took a pass from right winger Steven Golombisky the length of the ice for the team’s only goal.

The two teams battled all the way to the end, taking no prisoners. However, they did take a few penalties, as defenseman Ron Coleman received two roughing calls in the effort.

“I only deserved the second one,” said Coleman.

Goaltender Paul Sholtis was excellent in net, keeping it a one-goal game most of the night before the ‘Topes added an empty-netter with time expiring.

“We all agreed as a team that he was excellent,” said forward Ginny Klinesteker.

Winger Amy Senne reportedly asked GM Mark Woods to sign Sholtis to a long term contract. When asked about the prospect of signing with Aventinus, Sholtis said, “I’d love to play. It was a lot of fun.”

Senne’s request is in response to the recent instability at the goalie position. Sholtis represents Aventinus’ third goalie in just five games, due to a rash of injuries, diaper duties, and allegedly prioritizing jobs, families, and beauty sleep over hockey.
