Goon Squad: We Don’t Need No Stinking Buzzers!

Ashley’s Aventinus (3-7-1) notched its third win of the season 2-1 against Goon Squad in exciting fashion on Sunday night’s Varsity Ice. However, the game was marked by confusion over some fundamentals of organized sports.

Joe Crossno scored in the first period with the helper coming from winger Steven Golombisky. Defenseman Daryl Coleman seemingly scored the second goal mid-way through the second period, but was informed by the referees to continue play even as both teams were setting up at center ice.

“The goalie had to scoop the puck out of the net to play it,” exclaimed an exasperated Ginny Klinesteker. “It was a goal!”

Despite that, the game seemed in hand. However, with just minutes left, Goon Squad tied it up with a power-play goal. Not to be deterred  Crossno leaped into action, scoring his second goal of the night with just 0:41 left on the clock, assisted by defenseman Ron Coleman and new team member Scott “Buddha” Bray, acquired from the Dearborn Heights Pylons in the Hat Trick Hockey League.

“I had a lot fun,” said Bray of his debut.

“He’s a welcomed member of the team,” said GM Mark Woods. “As long as the check clears.”

Goon Squad made one final rush. Poor eyesight, hearing-impairment, and a general lack of understanding of the rules of play would not deter #4 as he desperately raced to net, waiting until the buzzer stopped before ripping a shot wide of a mildly surprised Bidwell then crashing into the boards. A mild ruckus ensued as center Jennifer “Enforcer” Perry led the charge.

“He said he didn’t hear the buzzer,” noted Perry. “Given the thick glasses… I guess it’s possible.” He was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct, and both teams skated off without further incident.

Bidwell, known for his scholarly calm, said to the team afterwards, “What did we learn tonight? Play until the whistle blows.”

“And,” added Woods, “Play at least two or three seconds after the buzzer sounds.”

Said Golombisky, “Can I hit the ref now?”
