Father-Son Bonding Moment

It’s the classic line: I went to a fight and a hockey game broke out as Ashley’s Aventinus (4-10-2) tied Bell’s Beer late Sunday night. Ashley’s fell behind quickly 0-2 in the first, but battled back to tie it up in the second with goals from Ken Coleman and Justin Baier. Paul Sholtis played two solid periods of shutout hockey to help preserve the tie.

“Nice work in net,” said defenseman Ron Coleman regarding Sholtis’ play.

The third period was clearly set aside for old-time hockey, as eight penalties in the last three minutes were handed out. The fighting started when #6 punched Les Withrow after being allegedly tripped by Withrow. Center Steven Golombisky, taking exception to the attack on his line mate, quickly jumped into the fray, tearing off #6’s helmet and landing several punches.

It was later discovered that #6’s father tried to jump into the fight, yelling “get off my kid!” However, he was stopped by Golombisky’s father, Joe Crossno, who yelled back, “Get off my kid!” The two then argued over which beer tasted great or was less filling, and whether your peanut butter got in my chocolate or your chocolate got in my peanut butter.

“It was a great move to get that #6 ringer out of the game, as he was going to try to score,” assessed winger Dave Ferguson.

Both dads received roughing calls and promises of better Father’s Day gifts from their sons. Golombisky received a game misconduct. Several players had to inform Golombisky that the belt he was walking around with in the locker room was not a Mixed Martial Arts championship belt, but was in fact just Golombisky’s belt used to hold up his jeans.
