Finely-Aged Aventinus Tastes of Victory

Ashley’s Aventinus (5-1-1) continued its hot streak, going unbeaten in their last four games, including Sunday night’s 4-2 victory over Goon Squad.

“This was far and away our best game,” said winger Jeff Phillion. “We looked like a team that had been playing together for years.”

Phillion, a newcomer to Aventinus, did not realize that most of the team has been together in some form or another for nearly 20 years.

More than an oversight or a very kind underestimation of the ages of most of the players, the team has been rejuvenated by the addition of some key players.

Chris Sutton opened the scoring his seventh goal of the season late in the first period. Ken Coleman added another as Aventinus enjoyed a 2-1 lead that quickly evaporated in the second after Cody Stewart scored his second goal of the game. However, Scott Bray, coming off of a roughing penalty, scored the go-ahead goal with just over 11 minutes to play.

Strong in net was cagey veteran Rusty Barron, who did not allow a goal in the third period. “Rusty was awesome!” exclaimed winger Jen Perry.

“Goon squad pressured hard in the first period,” said Ron Coleman. “But, Rusty played well and they seemed to lose their enthusiasm as the game went on.”

Indeed, their enthusiasm all but disappeared after Daryl Coleman added the insurance goal with less than five minutes left in the game.

If there is a fountain of youth, then the team has found it: and it tastes like beer. Good beer.
